Homoeopathy

The word ‘Homoeopathy’ is derived from two Greek words, Homois meaning similar and pathos meaning suffering. Homoeopathy simply means treating diseases with remedies, prescribed in minute doses, which are capable of producing symptoms similar to the disease when taken by healthy people. It is based on the natural law of healing- "Similia Similibus Curantur" which means "likes are cured by likes". Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) gave it a scientific basis in the early 19th century. It has been serving suffering humanity for over two centuries and has withstood the upheavals of time and has emerged as a time-tested therapy. The scientific principles propounded by Hahnemann are natural and well proven and continue to be followed with success.

Origin

The principle of Homoeopathy has been known since the time of Hippocrates from Greece, the founder of medicine, around 450 BC More than a thousand years later the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus employed the same system of healing based upon the principle that "like cures like". But it was not until the late 18th century that Homoeopathy as it is practiced today was evolved by the great German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. He was appalled by the medical practices of that time and set about to develop a method of healing which would be safe, gentle, and effective. He believed that human beings have a capacity for healing themselves and that the symptoms of disease reflect the individuals struggle to overcome his illness.

Over two hundred years ago, the German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann discovered the principle that what substance could cause in the way of symptoms, it could also cure. Hahnemann was struck by the effect that certain drugs, when taken by him while quite healthy, produced symptoms that the drug was known to cure in sick. For instance, when he took Cinchona Bark, which contains quinine, he became ill with symptoms that exactly mimicked intermittent fever (now called malaria). He wondered if the reason Cinchona worked against intermittent fever was because it caused symptoms indistinguishable from intermittent fever in a healthy human.

Hahnemann continued to experiment, noting that every substance he took, whether a herb, a mineral, an animal product or a chemical compound, produced definite distinct symptoms in him. He further noted that no two substances produced exactly the same set of symptoms. Each provoked its own unique pattern of symptoms. Furthermore the symptoms were not just confined to the physical plane. Every substance tested also affected the mind and the emotions apart from the body.

Eventually, Hahnemann began to treat the sick on the principle ‘let likes be treated by likes’. From the outset he achieved outstanding clinical success.

CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES

Homoeopathy is the system of treatment based on demonstrable laws and principles, which are :

a) The Law of Similars - It is also called the Law of Cure. This law demonstrates that the selected remedy is able to produce a range of symptoms in a healthy person similar to that observed in the patient, thus leading to the principle of Similia Similibus Curentur i.e. let likes be treated by likes. To give a simple example the effects of peeling an onion are very similar to the symptoms of acute cold. The remedy prepared from the red onion, Allium cepa, is used to treat the type of cold in which the symptoms resemble those we get from peeling onion. The principle has been verified by millions of Homoeopaths all over the world.

b) The Law of Single Remedy - This law directs to choose and administer such a single remedy, which is most similar to the symptom complex of the sick person at a time.

c) The Law of Minimum Dose - The similar remedy selected for a sick should be prescribed in minimum dose, so that when administered there is no toxic effects on the body. It just acts as a triggering and catalytic agent to stimulate and strengthen the existing defense mechanism of the body. It does not need to be repeated frequently.

Holistic as well as Individualistic approach in Medicine through Homoeopathy: This is a key point and unique to Homoeopathy. Even though it may sound strange, Homoeopathy does not treat disease per se. A Homoeopath does not concentrate his therapy on, say arthritis or bronchitis or cancer. In other words he does not limit his treatment to painful joints, inflamed bronchi or a malignant growth. Rather, he treats all aspects mental, emotional and physical of the person who happens to be suffering with arthritis or bronchitis or cancer. Homoeopathy regards each patient as a unique individual, e.g. six persons with hepatitis might get a different Homoeopathic remedy, each one aimed at the individual’s totality of symptoms rather than at his liver alone. The physicians’ interest is not only to alleviate the patients’ present symptoms but also his long-term well being.

Concept of Vital Force

Dr. Hahnemann discovered that the human body is endowed with a force that reacts against the inimical forces, which produce disease. It becomes deranged during illness and the best-selected Homoeopathic remedies stimulate this failing vital force so that, as Hahnemann said "it can again take the reins and conduct the system on way to health".

Concept of Miasm

Psora, Syphilis and Sycosis are the three fundamental causes of all chronic diseases that afflict the human race as discovered by Dr. Hahnemann and called them miasms. This word is derived from Greek word miainein meaning ‘to pollute’.

Syphilis and Sycosis are the venereal and contagious chronic diseases, whereas Psora is a non-venereal chronic disease. Psora is present from the beginning to end of life and is the root cause of most of the diseases.

Principle of Drug Proving

To apply drugs for therapeutic use, their curative powers should be known. The proving of the drug is the method employed to know these powers and is unique to Homoeopathy as they are proved on healthy human beings. The symptoms thus known are the true record of the curative properties of a drug or the pathogenesis of a drug.

Drug Dynamisation or Potentisation

Drugs are prepared in such a way that they retain maximum medicinal powers without producing any toxic action on the body. It was found experimentally by Dr. Hahnemann that when diluted drugs are powerfully succussed they develop lasting medicinal powers.

DEVELOPMENT AND ITS STATUS

HISTORICAL EVOLUTION IN INDIA

Homoeopathy entered India in 1839 when Dr. John Martin Honigberger was called to treat Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of Punjab, for paralysis of vocal cords and oedema. The Maharaja was relieved of his complaints and in return received valuable rewards and later on was made officer-in-charge of a hospital. Dr. Honigberger later on went to Calcutta and started practice there. This royal patronage helped the system to have its roots in India. A large number of missionaries, amateurs in Indian civil and military service personals practiced Homoeopathy extensively and spread this system mostly in Bengal and South India.

RECOGNITION BY THE GOVERNMENT

The Government of India soon after Independence did not lost time to develop Homoeopathic System of Medicine. The setting up of Homoeopathic Enquiry Committee in 1948, the Committee by Planning Commission in 1951 and the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committee in 1962 testify to this. At the instance of the recommendation of these Committees, the Government of India have accepted Homoeopathy as one of the national System of Medicine and started releasing funds for its development, during the Second five-year Plan. Some of the States also made their own contribution to Homoeopathic Education, the employment of Homoeopathic practitioners in health services and regulating the practice by enacting States Acts & Rules, etc.

NATIONAL HEALTH POLICY & HOMOEOPATHY

The National Health Policy as passed by the Indian Parliament assigns to the Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy an important role in the delivery of primary health care and envisages its integration in the over all health care delivery system, specially in the preventive and promotive aspects of health care in the context of the national target of achieving "Health for all by 2000 AD"

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA

Homoeopathy continued to spread and by the beginning of 20th century most of the important cities in India had Homoeopathic dispensaries. The popularity of the system led to a mushroom growth of quacks practicing Homoeopathy. Seeing this deplorable state of affairs, efforts were made by the Government. It took several steps and in 1948, a Homoeopathic Enquiry Committee was set up to evolve a suitable arrangement to regulate teaching and practice of Homoeopathy. A Homoeopathic Advisory Committee was appointed in 1952 by the Govt. of India and the recommendations of these committees led to passing of a Central Act in 1973 for recognition of this system of medicine. Homoeopathy now has been accepted as one of the National Systems of Medicine in India.

PRESENT SET UP

Homoeopathy in India enjoys Government support along with the other systems of medicine because Government is of the view that presence of all these complementary alternative systems of therapeutics offers a much wider spectrum of curative medicine than is available in any other country.

Scope of Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy is a therapeutic system founded upon certain laws ( law of similars) that are in turn founded upon natural laws. Since it is founded up on natural laws, it is as basic and eternal as the hills. It offers to the independent mind an opportunity continually to seek new verification of the natural laws. We must remember that though we may fail the failure is ours; it is not the failure of homoeopathy.

Homoeopathy is effective in all natural diseases including viral infections. In certain ailments Homoeopathy has a better scope. The following are the few among them.

  • Terminal care of cancer patients
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Allergic and other disorders, which has a relapsing nature. E.g.; recurrent tonsillitis, recurrent sinusitis etc etc:

But the scope is limited in certain surgical emergencies like perforated gastric ulcer ,. Strangulated hernia etc etc:

Homoeopathy not only consider the diagnosis but also the general character of the individual. So an homoeopathic physician needs a lot more information than any physicians of other disciplines, Homoeopathy offers a promising result in the treatment of different diseases mentioned on the right hand side of this page.

Science of Homoeopathy

Vital Force

It is the super sensual thing which maintains the body in living condition. This makes all the difference between the living and dead. This thing according to Hahnemann, the father of Homoeopathy is the “Vital Force”- the force of life which appears first in the fifth edition of Organon of medicine (1833). In the sixth edition, the same is changed to “Vital Principle”.

Vital force has the special characteristics or qualities:

  • Spiritual
  • Autocratic
  • Automatic
  • Dynamic
  • Unintelligent and instinctive

Spiritual: The word spiritual means immaterial. The vital force is immaterial and hence it is not perceptible to our senses. It is cognizable only by its effects when it works through the material body. Its existence can only be known through its manifestations.

Autocratic : ”Auto” means self, ”Keratos” means power. So the word”autocracy” means self-powered. The vital force is autocratic. It is the supreme authority in our body ruling in its own way. It is not governed by anything but governs the material body as the highest authority, so it is called autocratic. It remains in the organism as per its own will and maintains the integrity of the organism.

Automatic:”Automatic” means self-acting, the vital force is an automatic force which animates the material organism and imparts life to it. It reacts spontaneously to all stimuli against itself.

Dynamic: The word “dynamic” means of force in action. The vital force (dynamis) is dynamic in nature. That means it is a force in action. It is present in each and every part of the human economy. Without this vital energy, the cell or the whole body becomes inanimate and is dead.

Unintelligent and instinctive: Intellect means “power to judge and comprehend”. As it is only a force, it cannot reason out itself. Forces can cause a thing in a fixed way but they themselves cannot change their function according to the situation. Instinct means “inborn impulse”, any energy by itself is always unintelligent. It has no power to judge and comprehend in its own and then to act according to the changed circumstances. It can’t take suitable decision as per the changing situation, and always works through its own instinct.

PHYSIO THERAPEUTIC MEASURES

Medicines are not the sole means of giving relief to the sick. Hahnemann considered this fact and recognized the therapeutic value and scope of different physical measures other than medicines like Mesmerism, Magnetism, Electricity, Galvanism, Massage and Bath, in the management of different disease condition. In many cases they afford relief and even when medicines fail to arouse any vital reaction, sometimes they help in bringing speedy cure of disease.

Different type of physiotherapeutic measures

1-ANIMAL MAGNETISM or MESMERISM:

It is a therapeutic measure of communication of human power upon the human organism by a well intentioned person powerfully exerting his will. The means by which the power is exerted is called mesmerism. The founder was Mesmer.

Types of mesmerism are there--.positive and negative mesmerism.

Negative mesmerism: it is another method of practicing mesmerism characterized by the discharge of vital force which is excessively accumulated in individual parts of the system of undebilitated person by negative pass. It is just opposite of positive mesmerism and it produces just contrary effect. It seems useful in cases such as, to rouse from a somnambulistic sleep, sudden suppression of menses in previously healthy women by a violent mental shock etc:

2-MAGNETISM:

The powers of a magnet can be employed for healing purposes. The positive effect of north and south poles of a powerful magnetic bar are said in materia medica pura. Though both poles are alike powerful they don’t oppose each other in their respective action. The dose may be modified according to the length of time of contact. Too violent action may be antidote by application of a plate of polished zinc.

3-ELECTRICITY AND GALVANISM:

The dynamic force of electricity and galvanism may also be employed for treating diseases. There may be diseases, especially diseases of sensibility and irritability, abnormal sensations, and involuntary muscular movements

4-MASSAGE:

Massage of vigorous, good natured person is useful for chronic invalid who though cured still suffers from loss of flesh, weakness of digestion and lack of sleep due to slow convalescence.

5-BATHS:

Baths of pure water acts partly palliative and partly homoeopathic serviceable aids in restoring health in acute diseases as well as in convalescences of cured chronic patients

PATHOLOGY AND HOMOEOPATHY

Pathology is defined as that branch of medical science which deals with the nature of disease through the study of its causes and effects together with the associated alterations of structure and functions. It mainly concerns itself with the study of disordered functions and deranged structure in diseases and correlation with clinical picture.

The relationship between the pathology and homoeopathy has generally been either unrealized or often even misunderstood by the homoeopath. He depends mainly on the totality of symptoms and selects his remedy on the basis of this, and often cures the patient. In this picture of the totality, for the purpose of deciding the prescription the pathological stage and symptoms arising from it rank quiet low. Sometimes the pathology is even ignored. But inspite of the pathological state being given lesser or no value it is noted that, with the application of simillimum not only the totality of symptoms disappear but simultaneously with it the underlying pathological condition get corrected leaving behind a healthy state. So the homoeopath generally finds more need to consider or worry about the pathology. Inspite of this pathology has definite though limited value in homoeopathy, a true practitioner of the healing art must have the knowledge of disease which is evidenced from the section 3 of organon of medicine and this knowledge of disease is derived from the knowledge of pathology, practice of medicine and other allied medical science. From the knowledge of pathology, practice of medicine and other allied medical subjects we can diagnose the disease which has some importance in homoeopathy .So the importance of diagnosis in homoeopathy indirectly reveals the importance of pathology in homoeopathy.

OBSTACLES TO CURE

Some factors are there which hinder the cure by obstructing the effect of properly prescribed medicine in spite of its suitable dose and proper repetitions. The physician has to know these factors which may act as the obstacles to cure in each particular case. He should also know how to remove these obstacles in order to cure permanently.

1) Exciting/Maintaining causes:

It includes,

a) Taking such diet which is not suitable for his disease condition. The patient will not be cured until this error is corrected.

b) Habits like alcoholism, onanism, smoking etc.

c) Environmental: smoky dusty areas and in damp basements and cellars.

D) Sometimes the occupation of the patient act as an obstacle to cure.

2)Miasmatic cause:

In chronic cases the miasm may act as obstacle. In such cases proper anti miasmatic medicines should be given.

3)pathological cause

4) Modern drug and its influence:

The prolonged use of such violent drugs in ever increasing doses may produce artificial chronic diseases which weaken the vital force severely. It is also seen that prolonged and indiscriminate use of even potentised medicine may also complicate the cases.

HOMOEOPATHIC AGGRAVATION

In “Organon of Medicine” the Aphorism 154 says a disease that is of not very long standing ordinarily yields without any great degree of suffering to a first dose of the remedy, which is to say that in acute diseases we seldom see anything like striking aggravations unless the acute disease has drawn near death door or is very severe, unless it has lasted many days, and breaking down of blood and tissue is threatened or has taken place. Then we will see sharp aggravation, great prostration, sweating, exhaustion, vomiting and purging following the action of the remedy.

If the disease has ultimate itself in change of tissue, then you see striking aggravations, even aggravations that cannot be recovered from, such as we find in the advance forms of tissue change Ex., where the kidneys are destroyed or liver destroyed, or in phthisis, were the lungs are destroyed

Where there are no tissue changes, were no ultimate are present, then you may expect the remedy to cure the patient without any serious aggravations, or without any sharp sufferings. We must discriminate between which is reaction and that which calls off the remedy. These things are only seen in homoeopathy never in any other practice

When a patient comes back after every dose of medicine with violent reaction or aggravation of the disease you know then, that there is some deep seated trouble.

In feeble patients you may expect feeble reactions, or none at all after your remedy, but in the feeble cases they are of such a character that you have few symptoms and you can very seldom find the remedy truly specific.

When a perfect homoeopathic remedy acts upon the body without any great degree of suffering, it is nothing more than the symptoms analogous to those of the disease labouring to overcome and annihilate this later by usurping the place.

As a general thing in acute diseases that effects slight aggravations of symptoms comes in a few minutes, you will hardly ever think of giving another dose. The remedy is so similar and that it is hardly ever necessary to repeat it. Now there are circumstances when it is necessary to repeat, but this is so difficult to teach, so difficult to lay down rules, the only safe plan is to begin the case without repetition, to give a single dose, wait and watch.

Relief that begins without any aggravations of the symptoms does not last so long in an acute disease as when an aggravation has taken place.

The dose of homoeopathic remedy can never be sufficiently small so as to be inferior to the power of natural disease which it can at least, partially extinguish and cure, provided it be capable of producing only a small increase of symptoms immediately after it is administered.

Similarity of the remedy is first and the dose is second. We must see by the experience in clinics and by considering the wonderful things that we have gone over in the doctrines, that we have really very little to do with the dose, and that we cannot lay down any fixed rule as to the best potency to use.

Herings Law of Cure

Herrings’ law of cure may be stated as follows:

At the time of cure, the symptoms will disappear

  • From within outward
  • From above downward
  • In the reverse order of their appearance- the first to appear being last to disappear.
From Within Outward:

When a correct homoeopathic medicine has been administered, it is seen that the symptoms will disappear from within outwards-a) that is from internal to external parts -b) From innermost to outer part. In cases where asthma develops due to suppression of skin symptoms then the asthma will be relieved at first and the skin disease will reappear if suitable homoeopathic remedy is applied. Here the well selected homoeopathic medicine will compel the suppressed internal disease to come out to the external parts, otherwise cure is not possible.

FROM More Important to Less Important Organ

The disease usually proceeds from less important to more important organ in its natural progress. When skin disease is suppressed asthma develops thus involving more important organ. When the rheumatic pain of joints has disappeared, the heart being the most important organ affected .when skin disease is suppressed hysteria develops.

From Above Downward

When the correct remedy has been administered it is seen that the pain in the shoulder will travel down the arm to the hand or from the hip to the foot. If a patient suffers from pain in different joints, relief will start from the joints of upper parts. That is neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist etc and the joints of lower limbs will subsequently be freed serially.

In The Reverse Order of their Appearence

Measles can be taken as an example .The cough coming first and departing last, the rash coming last and departing first. In case of chronic diseases it is found that the patient will retrace the road along which his disease has travelled and he will experience again the various ailments from which he has suffered until he gets back to the condition from which his disease started. Such appearance of old symptoms indicates that we are proceeding in the proper direction ie; cure.

Diet and Regimen

General Principle

Homoeopathy advocates the application of minute doses of medicine for the treatment of diseases. Considering this minute doses of medicine it is necessary that everything which can have any medicinal action can be removed from the diet and regimen of the patient during the treatment, so that the small doses may not be overwhelmed and extinguished or disturbed by any foreign medicinal irritant.

Diet and Regimen in Chronic Diseases.

Doctor Hahnemann has advised to avoid following type of diet and regimen in patients suffering from chronic diseases.

  • Beverages: coffee, fine Chinese herb tea, beer prepared with medicinal vegetable substances, liquors made with medicinal spices.
  • Food: highly spiced dishes and sauces, spiced cakes, crude medicinal soups, dishes of herbs possessing medicinal qualities, onion, old cheese and meets in a state of decomposition or that possess medicinal properties, as the flesh and fat of pork, ducks and geese, or veil that is too young, all the excesses in the food and in the use of sugar and salt and spirituous drinks
  • All kind of punch odors and perfumes of different types.
  • Clothing and mode of life: woolen clothing, heated rooms, a sedentary life style in closed apartments or frequent indulgence in passive exercise, uncleanliness, unnatural debauchary, enervation by reading obscene books, onanism or imperfect or suppressed intercourse in order to prevent conception, subjects of anger, grief, over exertion of mind and body, dwelling in marshy districts, damp rooms, poor living etc.
The most appropriate regimen during the employment of medicine in the chronic disease is
  • The removal of above mentioned obstacles to recovery.
  • Innocent moral and intellectual recreation
  • Active exercise in all kind of weather.
  • Suitable nutritious, non medicinal food and drinks etc.
DIET AND REGIMEN IN ACUTE DISEASES

Food and drinks: in acute diseases (except in cases of mental derangements) Hahnemann advised to gratify the patient’s desire with regard to food and drink without offering or urging. In acute diseases the patient desires those things that give palliative relief. They are however not strictly speaking of a medicinal character and merely supply a sort of gratification of desire of the patient within moderate limits, may act as slight obstacles to the radical removal of disease. This slight hindrances will be amply counteracted and overcome by

  • Power of homoeopathically suited medicines
  • The vital force set free by the homoeopathic medicine.
  • By refreshing the effect of gratified desire

Temperature and clothing: the temperature of room and quality of covering must be arranged entirely according to the desire of the patient

Mind: he must keep from all over exertion of mind and exiting emotion

FUNDAMENTAL OR CARDINAL PRINCIPLES OF HOMOEOPATHY

Every treatment has a philosophy of its own and its therapeutic is based on certain fundamental principles which are quiet distinct and different from those of other schools of medical science. These fundamental principles are:

  • Law OF Similia
  • Law OF Simplex
  • Law OF Minimum Dose
  • Doctrine of Drug Proving
  • Theory of Chronic Disease
  • Theory of Vital Force
  • Doctrine of Drug Dyanamisation
LAW OF SIMILIA

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine founded on a definite law- similia similibus curantur which means like cures like. The word homoeopathy is a Greek derivation where homoeos means similar and pathos means suffering. So homoeopathy may be defined as the therapeutic method of symptom similarity.

According to this system the choice of medicine is fundamentally based on the principle that the medicine must have the capability of producing most similar symptom of the disease to be cured in healthy persons. In sec.26 of Organon of medicine Hahnemann gives the therapeutic law as follows. A weaker dynamic affection is permanently extinguished in the living organism by a stronger one if the latter is very similar to the former in its manifestation.

LAW OF SIMPLEX -THE SINGLE REMEDY

In sec.272 Hahnemann states that only one single simple medicinal substance is to be administered in a given case at a time .This is due to the following reasons.

  • The homoeopathic remedies were proved singly .
  • Only one remedy can be the most similar at any given time with the condition of any given patient
  • If more than one remedy is used the doctor can’t know which element was curative and source of future guidance was there by obscured.
  • If more than one drug is given in one prescription the possibility of synergistic action cannot be ruled out, but it cannot be argued that effect will be the sum total of the effects of the separate drugs.
  • Besides everything, vital force- the life principle governing the complex human life is a single substance, so the medicine intended to correct this disturbance and disharmony should be prescribed only singly one at a time.
LAW OF MINIMUM DOSE

The administration of minimum dose of medicine has the following advantage.

  • To avoid unwanted aggravation.
  • The specific dynamic action which produces the uncommon characteristics distinguishing symptoms of the drugs is produced by the minimum quantity of drug.
  • The smallness of the dose not allows the drug to do any organic damage nor there do any risk of drug addiction and side effects.
  • To take full advantage of final and finest curative properties of remedy they should be administered in minimum dose.
  • In order to maintain the similarity of the sequence of the disease and drug a minimum dose is also necessary.
  • The concept of minimum dose can be verified by Arndt Schultz law: that small dose stimulate, medium dose paralyze and large doses kill.
  • Law of least action-the quantity of action necessary to affect any change in nature is the least possible; the decisive amount is always a minimum -an infinitesimal.
  • According to the law of quantity of Fincke:the quality of action of homoeopathic remedy is determined by its quantity in inverse ratio.
DOCTRINE OF DRUG PROVING

Drug proving is a systematic investigation of pathogenetic power of medicine on the healthy human being of different ages, both sexes and of various constitutions. Drug must be proved on human being because of following reasons.

  • Animals do not give subjective or mental symptoms.
  • Effect of same drug on animals and human beings are different.
  • We do not get the modalities and finer symptoms of the drugs.

Moreover the human beings should be healthy due to following reasons

  • Symptoms of the drug and that of disease will mixed together
  • The action of drug on the sick person is different from the normal one.
THEORY OF CHRONIC DISEASES

Chronic diseases are caused by chronic miasms.

Those chronic miasms are psora, syphilis and sycosis. Psora is the real fundamental cause and producer of innumerable forms of diseases. It is the mother of all disease .Cure is only possible by proper ant miasmatic treatment.

THEORY OF VITAL FORCE

Hahnemann speaks of the vital force in aphorism 10 of organon of medicines. Thus the material organism without the vital force is incapable of no sensation, no function, no self preservation. It derives all sensation and performs all functions of life solely by means of immaterial being. The vital force which animates the material organism in health and in disease. In healthy condition it is this vital force which maintains normal functions and sensations of the organism, but when this vital force is primarily and dynamically deranged by some morbific dynamic influence, it causes abnormal sensation and function which are manifested outwardly through the material body as abnormal signs and symptoms -totality of which constitutes the disease.

DOCTRINE OF DRUG DYANAMISATION

Homoeopathic dyanamisation are processes by which the medicinal properties which are latent in natural substances while in their crude state, became awakened and developed into activity to an incredible degree. The objectives of potentization in homoeopathy are

  • To reduce the medicinal substance. This helps to avoid unwanted medicinal aggravation and side effects.
  • Homoeopathy believes that the vital force is dynamic in nature and if affected by disease, can only be cured by dynamic power of medicine and not by its material quality.
  • By this process the most virulent and deadly poisons are not only rendered harmless but are transformed into beneficial healing remedies.
  • Substance which are medicinally inert in their in their crude natural state are thus rendered active and effective for healing the sick.
  • The medicinal qualities of other drugs which are more or less active in their natural state are enhanced and their spheres of action are broadened by this process.
  • The action of potentised medicines is deeper, longer and more widespread.
PROGNOSIS AFTER OBSERVING THE ACTON OF THE REMEDY (12 0bservation of Dr Kent)

What happens when an homoeopathic remedy is prescribed for a patient? Dr. J.T. KENT clearly explains the possibilities through his 12 observations

1st OBSERVATION-A PROLONGED AGGRAVATION AND FINAL DECLINE OF PATIENT

The prescription may or may not be correct. The antipsoric given may be too deep, it has established destruction. In this state the vital reaction may be impossible, he was an incurable case. There has been an irreversible tissue change.

What to do?

Retake the case and prescribe the medicine in low potency. In incurable and doubtful cases give no higher than 30th or 200th potency.

According to Dr H A Robert better not to give an antipsoric cases in such cases

Prognosis- very bad
2nd OBSERVATION- AGGRAVATION,BUT FINAL AND SLOW IMPROVEMENT

After taking the dose the patient feels some improvement. The inference is that medicine is correct but the potency is very high. Here some marked tissue changes in some organ, and the medicine will act for a long time.

Since the medicine is acting favorably the physician should wait till the action of the remedy finish by itself

Prognosis – favorable
3rd OBSERVATION-AGGRAVATION IS QUICK, SHORT AND STRONG WITH RAPID IMPROVEMENT OF THE PATIENT .

Whenever you find an aggravation comes quick and short, and has been more or less vigorous, and then improvement will be long, will be marked, and there is no tendency to any structural change in the vital organs.

Any structural changes that may be present will be superficial and in organs that are not important to the life .Such organic changes are surface changes, and are not like the changes that take place in the liver, kidney, heart and brain.

Such is the slight aggravation of the symptoms that occurs in the first hours after the remedy in an acute sickness, or during the first few days in a chronic case.

4th OBSERVATION-NO AGGRAVATION WHATEVER.

In cures without any aggravation we know that the potency is suitable, and the remedy, is the curative remedy, provided that the symptoms go off and the patient returns to health in an orderly way.

It is the highest order of cure in acute affections, yet the physician sometimes will be more satisfied if in the beginning of his prescribing he notices a slight aggravation of the symptoms.

Prognosis-very good
5th OBSERVATION-AMELIORATION COMES FIRST AND AGGRAVATION COMES AFTERWARDS

It is an unfavorable condition, either the remedy was superficial and could act as a palliative or the patient was incurable and the remedy was somewhat suitable. A further study of the case shows that the remedy was only similar with the most grievous symptoms, that it did not cover the whole case, or constitution of the patient.

Prognosis-bad

6th OBSERVATION -TOO SHORT RELIEF OF THE SYMPTOMS.

If it is a short amelioration in acute cases, it is because such high grade inflammatory action is present that organs are threatened by the rapid processes going on. If it is too short amelioration in chronic diseases it means that there are structural changes and organs are destroyed or being destroyed or in a very precarious condition.

Prognosis-very bad (in chronic disease)

7th OBSERVATION - FULL TIME AMEOLARATION OF SYMPTOMS YET NO SPECIAL RELIEF OF THE PATIENT

The remedy acted favorably, but the patient is not cured, and never can be cured. The patient is palliated in this instance. Eg: a patient with one kidney can only improve to a certain degree; patient with fibrinous structural change in the lung can improve only to a certain extent.

Prognosis-bad

8th OBSERVATION- SOME PATIENT MAY PROVE EVERY REMEDY THEY GET

Some patients is said to have idiosyncrasy to everything, and these oversensitive patients are often incurable. When we administer a dose of high potency they will prove that medicine. And while on the influence of that medicine they are not under the influence of anything else.

In such cases the choice of medicinal potency should be low, rather crude.

Prognosis-bad

9th OBSERVATION-ACTION OF MEDICINES UPON THE PROVERS.

Healthy provers are always benefitted by proving, if they are properly conducted.

Prognosis-favorable

10th OBSERVATION-NEW SYMPTOMS APPEARING

Prescription proves an unfavorable one. The greater the array of new symptoms coming out after the administration of a remedy more doubt is thrown upon the prescription. The probability is, after these new symptoms are passed away the patient will settle down to the original state and no improvement takes place.

If the symptoms are mild the physician should wait and watch till the symptoms subside, and then retake the case and prescribe a simillimum. But if the symptoms are more violent it should be antidoted.

Prognosis -bad

11th OBSDRVATION-OLD SYMPTOMS ARE OBSERVED TO REAPPEAR

Physician must know that the patient is on the road to recovery. Old symptoms will come, and go off without any change of medicine .If the old symptoms come back to stay for a pretty long time then a repetition of dose is necessary.

Prognosis-very good

12th OBSERVATION - SYMPTOMS TAKES THE WRONG DIRECTION .

When disease goes from circumference to centre then the remedy must be antidoted at once, otherwise the structural changes will take place in that new site. The physician should retake and prescribe a new medicine.

Prognosis-unfavorable

OBSTACLES TO CURE

Some factors are there which hinder the cure by obstructing the effect of properly prescribed medicine in spite of its suitable dose and proper repetitions. The physician has to know these factors which may act as the obstacles to cure in each particular case. He should also know how to remove these obstacles in order to cure permanently.

Exciting/Maintaining causes:

It includes,

  • Taking such diet which is not suitable for his disease condition. The patient will not be cured until this error is corrected.
  • Habits like alcoholism, onanism, smoking etc.
  • Environmental: smoky dusty areas and in damp basements and cellars.
  • Sometimes the occupation of the patient act as an obstacle to cure.
Miasmatic cause:

In chronic cases the miasm may act as obstacle. In such cases proper anti miasmatic medicines should be given.

pathological cause
Modern drug and its influence:

The prolonged use of such violent drugs in ever increasing doses may produce artificial chronic diseases which weaken the vital force severely. It is also seen that prolonged and indiscriminate use of even potentised medicine may also complicate the cases.

  • The vital forcehome set free by the homoeopathic medicine.
  • By refreshing the effect of gratified desire

Temperature and clothing: the temperature of room and quality of covering must be arranged entirely according to the desire of the patient

Mind: he must keep from all over exertion of mind and exiting emotion

Do’s Don’ts in Homeopathy?

If you are taking homeopathic medicine, it better follow the instructions.

Avoid direct contact of the palm, don’t put the medicine may it be pills or tablet or even power, directly in your palm. Better to put the pills or tab in the cap, and if it is powder put it in a piece of butter paper before having it.

Avoid the habit of drinking alcohol, smoking, tobacco chewing, all this will hinder the action of homeopathic medicine, which is acting in the dynamic plain.

Food restriction-in particular diseases it is better to keep away from certain foods. It is the consulting doctor to decide what all should be avoided. But once the disease is completely cured you can restart the favorite food you have avoided.

While taking medicines spicy foods and foods that have some medicinal properties should be avoided. Ginger, garlic and onion are one among them. However, if the physician feels, depending up on the disease in treatment that the patient can take above substance, then it is better to take it half an hour before or after food.

Keep the medicines away from strong aromatic odors such as chemical, paint and camphor

AND WHAT ABOUT COFFEE?

-it is still a controversial subject. Some are of strong opinion that it should be avoided at any cost, but some say can have coffee. So it is better to take the advice from the doctor. Even if you take it, it is better to take it half an hour before or after food. But remember coffee will definitely affect the action of certain medicine.

Multivitamins and minerals can be taken with homeopathic medicines.

Add on medication

. Some patients may be taking allopathic as well as ayurvedic medicines for certain diseases like diabetes, hypertension, or kidney diseases, etc. In such conditions never ask the patients to withdraw the medicines suddenly. Because there may be a sudden aggravation of the disease. So in such a condition when the doctor feels that homeopathic medicines have started acting, and he can manage the condition for which the patient is taking allopathic or ayurvedic medicines, he can gradually withdraw the allopathic or ayurvedic medicines.

In situations where both allopathic and homeopathic, or homeopathic and ayurvedic medicines are to be taken better to keep half an hour gap between each medicine.

Applying of liniments, ointments, and oils, whether it is ayurvedic or allopathic should not be done.

Smelling of medicated oils and balms should also be not done.

Homoeopathy As A Science And Art

According to Webster’s 7th new collegiate dictionary -

Science: is a department of systematized knowledge of an object of study, knowledge of covering general truths or the operation of general laws, especially as obtained and tested through scientific method .

Scientific method: principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of problem, collection of data through observation and experiment and the formulation and testing of a hypothesis.

Art: systematic application of knowledge of skill in affecting a desired result.

Relation Between Science And Art

Science and art are inseparably bound together. Every art has its foundation in science, and every science finds its expression in art. Consciously or unconsciously, the artist or the crafts man at work is applying principles and laws formulated and systematized knowledge of which constitutes science.

Homoeopathy As Science

Like chemistry or physics, homoeopathy is established on the principles of the inductive method in science. It rests fundamentally upon some principles, which are similia, simplex, minimum dose, drug proving, chronic disease, potentization and vital force. The formulation of every single principle is based on pure observation of facts and thoroughly rational induction and confirmed by myriads of subsequent experiments.

www.onlinehomeocure.com

Palliation

Palliation denotes the temporary relief of symptoms of disease. Here though the symptom is relieved the disease remains and remains at the same place and in the identical form. On the contrary, suppression denotes the temporary relief of symptoms with consequent involvement of vital organs. The existing symptom is transformed into symptoms of other diseases. Repeated palliation in curable cases turned into incurable one because of consequent involvement of vital organs.

EXAMPLE: a patient is suffering from headache and whenever he takes any painkiller medicine headache relieves but after few days, it again reappears. Here the symptom is relieved temporarily. This is an example of palliation.

Conditions Where Palliation Is Justfiable
  • Palliation by homeopathic medicines of incurable cases.
    • In advanced cases with irreversible pathological changes
    • when we are facing these incurable cases, the administration of similar remedy almost always ameliorates the situation at least for 3 or 4 days, not usually for a longer period. When symptoms returns, it means that the indicated remedy will be called into use again. Thus the patients can be made much more comfortable.
  • Patient lacking any of the vital organs
    • Palliation is the only method of choice in cases where the patient lacks any of the vital organs. Example: after splenectomy or patient with one kidney, complete cure is impossible for the obvious cause. The patient may lead a more or less normal life through the compensatory mechanism supported by palliative treatment when.
  • Palliation by some other means
    • Only in more urgent cases where danger to life and imminent death allows no time for the action of homeopathic medicine.
    • In sudden accidents to be previously healthy individuals, as a preliminary measure.
    • In sudden poisoning.

Pathology and Homoeopathy

Pathology is defined as that branch of medical science, which deals with the nature of disease through the study of its causes and effects, together with the associated alterations of structure and functions. It mainly concerns itself with the study of disordered functions and deranged structure in diseases and correlation with the clinical pictures.

The relationship between the pathology and homoeopathy has generally been either unrealized or often misunderstood even by the homoeopath itself. He depends mainly on the totality of symptoms and selects his remedy assuming this, and eventually cures the patient. In this picture of the totality, for deciding the prescription, the pathological stage and symptoms arising from it rank quite low. Sometimes the pathology is even ignored. However, in spite of the pathological state being given lesser or no value it is noted that, with the application of the simillimum not only the totality of symptoms disappears but simultaneously with it the underlying pathological condition gets corrected leaving behind a healthy state. So the homeopaths generally find more need to consider or worry about the pathology. In homoeopathy, a true practitioner of the healing art must have the knowledge of disease, which is evidenced from the section 3 of organon of medicine, and this knowledge of disease is derived from the knowledge of pathology, practice of medicine and other allied with medical science. From the knowledge of pathology, practice of medicine and other allied with medical subjects, we can diagnose the disease which has importance in homoeopathy. So the importance of diagnosis in homoeopathy indirectly reveals the importance of pathology in homoeopathy.

Indisposition

Indisposition means a trivial alteration of health, manifested by one or more trivial symptom observed only a short time previously due to some exciting cause. This is a minor ailment or mimicking sickness.

Treatment

A slight alteration in diet and regimen is usually sufficient to remove such an indisposition.

In Organon of medicine, section 150, Hahnemann says: if the patient complains of one or more trivial symptoms that have been only observed a short time previously, the physician should not regard this as fully developed disease that requires serious medical aid. A slight alteration in the diet and regimen will usually suffice such an indisposition.

Example
  • In case of upset of the stomach due to over eating, fasting or light diet is sufficient to restore the health.
  • A person feels exhausted and tired after loss of sleep due to night watching. He will be all right after adequate rest and sleep without any medical help.
  • A patient uses socks in the warmest weather; as a result, he suffers a burning sensation in his feet. As soon as he gives up wearing socks in hot weather his discomfort goes away. No medicinal help is necessary for this case. Only the removal of exciting cause is sufficient to restore the health.

Homeopathic Aggravation

  • In “Organon of Medicine” the Aphorism 154 says a disease that is of not very long standing ordinarily yields without any great degree of suffering to a first dose of the remedy, which is to say that in acute diseases, we seldom see anything like striking aggravations unless the acute disease has drawn near death door or is very severe, unless it has lasted many days, and breaking down of blood and tissue is threatened or has taken place. Then we will see sharp aggravation, extreme prostration, sweating, exhaustion, vomiting and purging following the action of the remedy.
  • If the disease has been ultimate itself in change of tissue, then you see striking aggravations, even aggravations that cannot be recovered from, such as we find in the advance forms of tissue change- example, where the kidneys are destroyed or liver destroyed, or in phthisis, where the lungs are destroyed.
  • Where there are no tissue changes, were no ultimate are present, then you may expect the remedy to cure the patient without any serious aggravations, or without any sharp sufferings. We must be discriminate between which is reaction and that which calls off the remedy. These things are only seen in homoeopathy never in any other practice.
  • When a patient comes back after every dose of medicine with violent reaction or aggravation of the disease, you know then, that there is some deep-seated trouble.
  • In feeble patients, you may expect feeble reactions, or none at all after your remedy, but in the feeble cases they are of such a character that you have few symptoms, and you can very seldom find the remedy truly specific.
  • The remedy will be exaggerated in oversensitive persons and sometimes in those of weakly constitution, especially those with a very narrow receding chin, those who have sunken eyes, and those who have senility marked in the eyes.
  • When a perfect homeopathic remedy acts on the body without any great degree of suffering, it is nothing more than the symptoms analogous to those of the disease labouring to overcome and annihilate this later by usurping the place.
  • As a general thing in acute diseases that effects slight aggravations of symptoms come in a few minutes, you will hardly ever think of giving another dose. The remedy is so similar, and that it is hardly ever necessary to repeat it. Now there are circumstances when it is necessary to repeat, but this is so difficult to teach, so difficult to lay down rules. The only safe plan is to begin the case without repetition, to give a single dose, wait and watch.
  • Relief that begins without any aggravations of the symptoms does not last so long in an acute disease as when an aggravation has taken place.
  • The smaller the dose of homeopathic remedy slighter the apparent aggravation, the disease and it is of shorter duration.
  • The dose of homeopathic remedy can never be sufficiently minute so as to be inferior to the power of natural disease which it can at least, partially extinguish and cure, provided it be capable of producing only a small increase of symptoms immediately after it is administered.
  • Similarity of the remedy is first and the dose is second. We must see by the experience in clinics and by considering the wonderful things that we have gone over in the doctrines, that we have really been very little to do with the dose, and that we cannot lay down any fixed rule as to the best potency to use.

Obstacles To Cure

Some factors are there, which hinder the cure by obstructing the effect of appropriately prescribed medicine in spite of its suitable dose and proper repetitions. The physician has to know these factors which may act as the obstacles to cure in each particular case. He should also know how to remove these obstacles in order to cure permanently.

1) Exciting/Maintaining causes:

It includes,

  1. Taking such diet, as, which is unsuitable for his present disease condition. The patient will not be cured until this error is corrected.
  2. Habits like alcoholism, onanism, smoking, etc.
  3. Environmental: smoky dusty areas and in damp basements and cellars.
  4. Sometimes the occupation of the patient acts as an obstacle to cure.

2) Miasmatic cause:

In chronic cases, the miasm may act as an obstacle. In such cases, proper anti miasmatic medicines should be given.

3) Pathological cause

4) Modern drug and its influence:

The lengthy use of such violent drugs in ever increasing doses may produce artificial chronic diseases, which weaken the vital force severely. It is also seen that prolonged and indiscriminate use of even potentised medicine may furthermore complicate the cases.

Physio Therapeutic Measures

(As mentioned by Dr. Hahnemann)

Medicines are not the sole means of giving relief to the sick. Hahnemann considered this fact and recognized the therapeutic value and scope of unusual physical measures other than medicines- like Mesmerism, Magnetism, Electricity, Galvanism, Massage and Bath, in the management of different disease condition. In many cases, they afford relief and even when medicines fail to arouse any vital reaction, sometimes they help in bringing a speedy cure of disease.

Different type of physiotherapeutic measures -
1-ANIMAL MAGNETISM or MESMERISM:

It is a therapeutic measure of communication of human power upon the human organism by a well-intentioned person powerfully exerting his will. The means by which the power is exerted is called mesmerism. The founder was Mesmer.

Two types of mesmerism are there-positive and negative mesmerism.

Positive mesmerism: it is one of the methods of practicing mesmerism characterized by the influx of more or less vital force to the patient by positive pass. This is found useful in cases of uterine hemorrhages, in rush of blood to head, sleeplessness, anxiety and restlessness of a weakly people.

Negative mesmerism: it is another method of practicing mesmerism characterized by the discharge of vital force, which is excessively accumulated in individual parts of the system of undebilitated people by negative pass. It is exactly opposite of positive mesmerism, and it produces the just contrary effects. It seems useful in cases such as, to rouse from a somnambulistic sleep, sudden suppression of menses in previously healthy women by a violent mental shock, etc.:

2-MAGNETISM:

The powers of a magnet can be employed for healing purposes. The positive effects of north and south poles of a powerful magnetic bar are said in materia medica pura. Though both poles are alike dominant, they don’t oppose each other in their respective action. The dose may be modified according to the length of time of contact. Too violent action may be antidoted by application of a plate of polished zinc.

3-ELECTRICITY AND GALVANISM:

The dynamic force of electricity and galvanism may also be employed for treating diseases. There may be diseases, especially diseases of sensibility and irritability, abnormal sensations, and involuntary muscular movements.

4-MASSAGE:

Massage of vigorous, good-natured people is useful for chronic invalid who though cured still suffers from loss of flesh, weakness of digestion and lack of sleep due to slow convalescence.

5-BATHS:

Baths of pure water act as partly palliative and somewhat homeopathic serviceable aids in restoring health in acute diseases as well as in convalescences of cured chronic patients.

Reaction And Immunity

Reaction is an expression of susceptibility. By susceptibility, we mean the general quality or capability of the organism of receiving impression and the power to react to stimuli. Reaction is one of the fundamental attributes of life. Digestion assimilation nutrition excretion, metabolism, etc. as well as disease process arising from infection depends on the power of the organism to react to specific stimuli.

The common reaction denotes usual susceptibility -hence health. The abnormal reaction signifies abnormal susceptibility- hence disease.

The cure of a disease depends upon the same power of the organism to react to the impression of a curative remedy.

When we administer a drug to a healthy person for making a homoeopathic proving "train of symptoms, which follows, represent the reaction of the susceptible organism to the specific irritant or stimulus thus administered."

When a homeopathically selected medicine is administered to a sick person disappearance of the symptoms and restoration of the patient to health represent the reaction of the susceptible organism to the impression of the curative remedy.

The kind and degree of reaction to medicines depend on the degree of susceptibility of the patient. Indeed, the path to modify susceptibility is the basis of the art of the physician.

Immunity:

Immunity is the ability of the body to recognize destroys and eliminates antigenic material foreign to its own.

Susceptibility Reaction And Immunity:

Health is a state of normal susceptibility as expressed by normal reaction. The living organism has a means of self-protection representing normal reaction of the vital energy, and it is nature’s method of protecting the organism. For example the production of antibody against the antigen is a manifestation of the vital reaction on the part of the organism. In healthy condition, this reaction is usual due to normal susceptibility hence the person is immune. But if there is some impairment of the normal susceptibility of the organism, the reaction to the stimulus will be impaired. This impaired reaction represents the loss of self-protection, which leads to disease.

Prognosis After Observing The Acton Of The Remedy

(12 observation of Dr Kent)

What happens when a homeopathic remedy is prescribed to a patient? Dr. J.T. KENT clearly explains the possibilities through his 12 observations.

Observation-A Prolonged Aggravation And Final Decline Of Patient

The prescription may or may not be correct. The antipsoric given may be too deep, it has established destruction. In this state, the vital reaction may be impossible; he was an incurable case. There has been an irreversible tissue change.

What to do?

Retake the case and prescribe the medicine in low potency. In incurable and doubtful cases give no higher than 30th or 200th potency.

According to Dr H A Robert better not to give antipsoric in such cases Prognosis- Very bad

Observation-Aggravation, But Final And Slow Improvement

After taking the dose the patient feels some improvement. The inference is that medicine is correct, but the potency is very high. Here some marked tissue changes in some organ, and the medicine will act for a long time.

Since the medicine is acting favorably the physician should wait till the action of the remedy finish by itself. Prognosis – Favorable

Observation-Aggravation Is Quick, Short And Strong With Rapid Improvement Of The Patient.

Whenever you find an aggravation comes quick and short, and has been more or less vigorous, and then improvement will be long, will be marked, and there is no tendency to any structural change in the vital organs.

Any structural changes that may be present will be superficial and in organs that are not important in the life. Such organic changes are surface changes, and are not like the changes that take place in the liver, kidney, heart and brain.

Such is the slight aggravation of the symptoms that occurs in the first hours after the remedy in an acute sickness, or during the first few days in a chronic case.

Observation-No Aggravation Whatever.

In cures without any aggravation, we know that the potency is suitable, and the remedy, is the curative remedy, provided that the symptoms go off and the patient returns to health in an orderly way.

It is the highest order of cure in acute affections, yet the physician sometimes will be more satisfied if in the beginning of his prescribing, he notices a slight aggravation of the symptoms. Prognosis-very good

Observation-Amelioration Comes First And Aggravation Comes Afterwards.

It is an unfavorable condition, either the remedy was superficial and could act as a palliative or the patient was incurable and the remedy was somewhat suitable. A further study to the case shows that the remedy was only similar with the most grievous symptoms, that it did not cover the whole case, or constitution of the patient. Prognosis-Bad

Observation -too short relief of the symptoms.

If it is a short amelioration in acute cases, it is because such high-grade inflammatory action is present that organs are threatened by the rapid processes going on. If it is too short amelioration in chronic diseases, it means that there are structural changes and organs are destroyed or being destroyed or in a very precarious condition. Prognosis- Very bad (in chronic disease)

Observation-Full Time Ameolaration Of Symptoms Yet No Special Relief Of The Patient

The remedy acted favorably, but the patient is not cured, and never can be cured. The patient is palliated in this instance. e.g.: a patient with one kidney can only improve to a certain degree; patient with fibrinous structural change in the lung can improve only to a certain extent. Prognosis-Bad Observation-Some Patient May Prove Every Remedy They Get

Some patient is said to have an idiosyncrasy to everything, and these oversensitive patients are often incurable. When we administer a dose of high potency. they will prove that medicine. And while on the influence of that medicine, they are not under the influence of anything else.

In such cases, the choice of medicinal potency should be low, rather crude. Prognosis-Bad

Observation-Action Of Medicines Upon The Provers.
Healthy provers are always benefited by proving, if they are properly conducted. Prognosis- Favorable
Observation-New Symptoms Appearing

Prescription proves an unfavorable one. The greater the array of new symptoms coming out after the administration of a remedy more doubt is thrown upon the prescription. The probability is, after these new symptoms are passed away the patient will settle down to the original state, and no improvement takes place.

If the symptoms are mild, the physician should wait and watch until the symptoms subside, and then retake the case and prescribe a simillimum. But if the symptoms are more violent, it should be antidoted. Prognosis -Bad

Obsdrvation-Old Symptoms Are Observed To Reappear.

Physician must know that the patient is on the road to recovery. Old symptoms will come, and go off without any change of medicine. If the old symptoms come back to stay for a pretty long time, then a repetition of dose is necessary. Prognosis- Very good

Observation-Symptoms Takes The Wrong Direction.

When disease goes from the circumference to centre then the remedy must be antidoted at once, otherwise the structural changes will take place in that new site. The physician should retake and prescribe a new medicine. Prognosis- Unfavorable

Obstacles To Cure

The disappearance of existing disease manifestation at the cost of some new suffering involving the more vital organ within the body is called suppression.

Suppression is of two types:
  • Natural suppression
  • Artificial suppression
Natural Suppression

It is the sudden inhibition of normal functioning of vital force, ie; normal functioning of the body -

Examples are shock, fright, fear, excessive joy, grief, and worry, etc.

Artificial Suppression
Suppression caused by some artificial means- 1)Suppression caused by prolonged allopathic treatment.

The persistent and continued allopathic treatment has the effect of driving vital energy to express itself in some other form and usually in deeper and more life-sustaining organs.

2) Suppression of skin manifestation by external application -

Another form of suppression very commonly seen is external application to the removal of skin manifestation such as eczema. Such removal doesn’t cure the disease condition and the chronic miasm that has expressed through the skin manifestation is forced to hide its head, but it surely will be present within the organism and express itself in some deeper and more vital part.

3) Suppression of different miasmatic states-

When the primary manifestation of psora is suppressed by artificial means, it produces various other disease conditions affecting the more vital organ. When the allopathic physician destroys the venereal chancre by corroding or cauterizing, etc. then the chancre is replaced by more painful substitute which hastens onward to suppuration. When the primary manifestations of sycosis like condylomata or cauliflower like growth are removed by cauterizing, burning, etc then the fig wart disease after being removed of local symptoms would appear in a much worse form.

4) Suppression of natural secretions from the body by medicines-

Eg: a) use of opium and derivatives for suppression of cough.

  • Suppression of diarrhea by opium
  • Suppression of natural secretion by local application or some other external factors.

eg:suppression of perspiration of armpits and feet by medicinal powders or-

Suppression of menses by cold baths.

5) Suppression by removing organs by surgical means.

So the signs and symptoms are the means by the vital force that animate the body reveals that the person is sick. So if the signs symptoms in various organs are merely taken for treatment and not the person in the disease, cure will be only in the symptomatic level. And the person in disease will always be in disease. And the vital force that generates the symptoms will try to manifest fresh symptoms through more vital organs and ultimately the disease become more serious. So instead of suppressing the signs and symptoms, treatment should be in the mode that considers the man in disease and not the disease in man.

Susceptibility

Susceptibility is the general quality of all the living organism of receiving impressions and the power of reaction to stimuli.

Susceptibility represents a fundamental quality that distinguishes the living from the non- living. It forms the very basis of continued existence in this world and; therefore, a physician will have to be thoroughly conversant with the important role it plays in the following aspects:

1) Susceptibility and life

Susceptibility is the fundamental attributes of life. All the physiological and the pathological functions depend on this basic quality of life.

The different types of the physiological activities like digestion, excretion, nutrition, growth, secretion, metabolism, etc. as well as all disease processes arising from infection or contagion depends on the power of the organism to react to specific stimuli.

2) Susceptibility and health

An organism in perfect balance represents health. In the state of health, the body maintains the different vital operations normally. This is possible only when the organism exhibits normal susceptibility. As normal susceptibility is essential for the maintenance of health. Disease results from abnormal susceptibility. So all rational therapeutics should aim at the restoration of normal susceptibility in order to cure the disease.

3) Susceptibility and disease

Susceptibility as a state may be increased or diminished.

Increased susceptibility promotes the development of disease and abnormal responses to stimuli in the environment which ordinarily are innocuous.

Increased susceptibility is also denoted by the constitutional somato-type and by the temperaments. Homeopathic treatment can prevent the development of disease by altering the susceptibility to noxious influences in the environment, thereby modifying the response that we call disease.

Reduction in susceptibility results in suppressing not only the manifestations of the disease without affecting curatively the basic disease process but also the capacity of the patient to react to the simillimum. Under these conditions, the expected response may not be forth coming.

4) Susceptibility and cure

Homeopathic application of a remedy is an illustration of meeting the susceptibility and filling the vacuum that is present in the sick individual. The indications for a remedy show the susceptibility in a marked degree and the patient will respond because the similar potentised remedy is always stronger than the susceptibility, so that it fully satisfies the morbid condition. This satisfaction is based on a universal law governing the symptomatically similar medicine.

Restoration to normal susceptibility, therefore, is a pre-requisite to cure.

5) Susceptibility and remedies

A patient may be susceptible to a number of remedies, but the greatest susceptibility is manifested in the most similar one. Hence a given patient may be cured of his disease homeopathically by either of two methods; by giving several more or less similar medicines in succession or by giving one exactly similar medicine-the simillimum.

6) Susceptibility and posology

The doctrine of posology depends on the degree of susceptibility of the patient which is again modified by several factors. The general rule is -more the susceptibility, less will be the medicinal quantity, higher will be the potency.

7) Susceptibility and suppression

Susceptibility cannot be destroyed. It can only be transformed, and its manifestations may be changed. This is what happens when manifestations are suppressed by various procedures practiced by the medical world. When a curative remedy is applied, however, the energy releases itself is suitably modified so that nothing is left for manifestation and a cure, which is the removal of signs and symptoms, results. This modification can occur only when the remedy effects either the susceptibility or the noxious stimulus in question. The simillimum has no effect on the harmful stimuli. It, therefore, acts curatively by suitably modifying the susceptibility. By contrast, the antibiotics act as palliative by virtue of their influence on the noxious stimuli (bacteria) leaving by the susceptibility unmodified, which explains satisfactorily the propensity to relapses.

8) Susceptibility and Diathesis
Diathesis is the predisposition of certain somato-types to the development of certain disease.

The homoeopathic materia medica could be considered as the most exhaustive study of individual constitutions with their predisposition to diseases. This immense variety it is present undisturbed by the insistence on “grouping” and formal systems of classification, enables a homoeopathic physician to carry the practices of preventive medicine to the individual and not restricts to the group. The detailed psychosomatic attributes of the diathesis of psora, syphilis, and sycosis enable us to group this individual diathesis into three broad classes with well defined characteristics. This, to some extent, simplifies the process of individualization.

9) Susceptibility and constitution

“Constitution is that aggregate of hereditary characters, influenced more or less by environment, which determines the individual’s reaction successful or unsuccessful, to the stress of environment."

Thus a little reaction will readily convince us that the manifestations of the different hereditary plan or organizations will be determined by susceptibility. The final product which we perceive by the attributes in the emotional, intellectual and physical spheres, therefore, will be determined by susceptibility.

Sources Of Homeopathic Medicines

Homeopathic medicines are prepared from six sources,

Vegetable source-

About 60% of the medicines are prepared from plants. The whole plant itself or various parts of the plant are used in the preparation. Medicines like arnica montana , chamomilla, belladona, etc. are the examples.

  • From stem-rhus ven, Sabina etc; are prepared from roots.
  • From root-bry alb, sarsaparilla, rauwolfia etc.;
  • From bulb-allium cepa, allium sat; etc..
  • From bark- ashoka, beriberis vulg, bapt; etc..
  • From leaves-rhus tox, tabacum, thuja, etc.;
  • From flowers-crocus, etc.;
  • From fruits-aesculus, agnus, etc.
  • From seeds-avena sat, nux vom etc.;
  • From weeds-lycopodium.
  • From fungi agaricus, bovista.
Mineral kingdom

Medicines are also prepared from metals, non metals and their compounds. Even minerals are used for making medicines. Gold ( aurum met) potassium (kali carb), common salt( Natrum mur), sand (silica) are the examples.

Animal kingdom

Whole animal itself or their products are used for the medicinal purpose.

Examples are blatta Americana, apis mel, blatta orientalis, etc.;

Sarcode

These are medicines from healthy parts of the animals. For example, from endocrine glands, normal secretions from healthy human organs, etc. insulin, adrenalin, thyroideum,. pituitarinum etc.

Nosode

These are medicines produced from disease parts, or disease product from human being, animals or plants.

Tuberculinum, carcinosinum, variolinum etc. are some among them.

Imponderabilia

Certain energy sources like sun, moon, X ray, etc. are used to prepare medicine.

Preparation of homeopathic medicines

The method of preparation of homeopathic medicines is called as potentisation.

Here one part of original medicinal substance is mixed with 99 parts vehicle (a medium- may be alcohol, or sugar of milk) and shaken/rubbed violently for particular time. The product thus got is the 1c potency. One part of 1c thus prepared is taken mixed with a suitable carrier as above and the process is repeated. The product obtained is 2c. The process is repeated until the required potency is reached. We use 30, 200, 1000, 10000 potencies, etc.
