Hypokalemia

Hypokalemia is the decreased blood level of potassium. In hypokalemia, the blood level is below 3.5 nmol/ l. Potassium is an important electrolyte for the functioning of muscles and nerves, especially the muscles of the heart.

Causes of low level of potassium in blood.

Excessive sweating

Vomiting

Diarrhoea

Excessive alcohol use

Diuresis

Chronic kidney diseases

Folic acid deficiency

Some antibiotics

Symptoms of hypokalemia

Fatigue

Weakness

Muscle cramps

Palpitation

Constipation

Investigations

Complete blood count, with examination of minerals, vitamins and potassium.

Urine examination for potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Management

If symptomatic hospitalization is needed and check for the rhythm of the  heart. 

In moderate cases, the T wave in ECG is flattened. In severe cases, there is U wave formation and ST depression.

Identify the cause and treat. In moderate cases potassium supplements and in severe case supplement as IV drip.

If no identifiable cause is there food supplement is recommended.
